Architectural drawings of the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, c. 1883-1988.

Series 24 of RG 92-219. Documents: Administration Building, Children's Unit, Main Hospital Building (Building 50), Tuberculosis Hospital, chapel, laundry, and farm. Includes material about heating and ventilation system and wells. . This collection consists preliminary site plans and floor plans; drawings of elevations; some details for lights , fixtures and railings. Like many mental institutions from that era, the hospital started with a single Kirkbride building and a few related service buildings. (Kirkbride refers to the design advocated by nineteenth century Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride). The north wing was for female patients and the south wing was for male patients. The grand center wing, replaced in the 1960s, housed administration. The Kirkbride building at Traverse City State Hospital has been known for many years as Building 50. The drawings represent the work of these architects primarily: Gordon W. Loyd, Swanson Associates, and Field, Graheck, Bell and Kline.

Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital was opened in 1885 as the Northern Michigan Asylum at Traverse City. In 1911 under an Act passed by the Legislature the facility was renamed The Traverse City State Hospital. The final name change for the facility was to the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, which took effect on January 1, 1978.
